JLaw 'sacked superhero style'
The Hunger Games costume designers were inspired by Joan of Arc for Jennifer Lawrence's Mockingjay combat suit.
The 24-year-old actress plays Katniss Everdeen in the popular adventure franchise, with Mockingjay - Part 1 due out later this month.
Costume designers Kurt and Bart are behind her onscreen looks, which include the black skin-tight outfit she wears for combat. However, there was a fine line between keeping her streamlined and stylish and verging on a full-blown action hero.
“It’s a hyper-functional combat suit, very modular,” Kurt explained to New York Daily News. “It was important not to turn her into a superhero.”
In the end, the designers took their inspiration from a Metropolitan Museum depiction of Joan of Arc. Jennifer's look incorporated nylon pants with stirrups, a black jacket with nylon webbing, a breastplate and combat boots. She also has shoulder pads, knee guards and elbow guards.
“We knew the outfit would be black, but there are elements of the blackbird’s beautiful bluish iridescence,” Kurt revealed. “Her leg guards, her breast armour, they’re all imprinted with this subtle blue sheen.”
And Jennifer isn't the only one showing off new looks in the film. Elizabeth Banks plays the flamboyant Effie Trinket, who is known for extravagant costumes and bold make-up, including huge false eyelashes.
Kurt says the actress comes up with a lot of the ideas for her character herself.
“She’s really a lot like Edith Beale from Grey Gardens,” he said. “You can’t stifle that creativeness in somebody.”
