Johnny Depp jazzed for movie
Johnny Depp's Into the Woods costume is inspired by swing music.
The 51-year-old actor stars as the Wolf from Little Red Riding Hood in the upcoming fantasy flick, which brings many children's fairytales together in one story.
Costume designer Colleen Atwood has worked with the star many times during his work with director Tim Burton, such as Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd, and was thrilled to team up with Johnny again for this project.
“Johnny is my all-time favourite actor because I’ve worked with him so many times over the span of so many years,” Colleen gushed to WWD. “The wolf to me, is jazzed up, almost like a late '30s or early '40s swing version. I took a lot of elements from the costumes and music of that period.”
To capture this theme Colleen went for an ensemble made up of a furry Zoot suit and a fedora hat, with whiskers and thick bristly eyebrows to give a more dog-like appearance.
The fashionista also dressed the rest of the cast members, including Emily Blunt. She plays The Baker's Wife and Colleen spent a lot of time in an actual forest to find inspiration.
“Emily’s is sort of like little tiny pieces of fabric sewn together with the texture of moss-covered trees,” the designer added.
Alongside Into the Woods, Colleen reunited with Johnny on the just-wrapped Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, a sequel to Burton's 2010 film. He returns as the Mad Hatter and while Colleen couldn't give much away about the 2016 release, she did hint at what's in store with the costumes.
“Alice has a lot of fun stuff in it,” she smiled. “I got to design some very interesting and complicated costumes. I think you guys in the fashion industry will enjoy it.”
