Julia Roberts for Givenchy

Julia Roberts represents a "powerful woman" in her new Givenchy ads.

The 47-year-old actress has long been associated with beauty giant Lancôme, but she has now been scooped up by creative director Riccardo Tisci to front Givenchy's spring campaign.

In the photos Julia is seen in classic pieces from the brand, including a tuxedo dress, an oversized suit jacket and a dark shirt with a crisp white collar.

“The mood of the show was about this very powerful woman, and Julia represents this very much,” Riccardo told WWD. “She represents the couture part. It’s important to show your iconic work. I want to build what is the real classic wardrobe.”

The designer and actress have teamed up for many of her red carpet outfits over the last year and a half, such as her lace couture gown for the 2014 Oscars. But for this venture Riccardo, who will be celebrating his five-year anniversary at Givenchy in 2015, decided to go for a more "boyish" look.

“I decided to make her more intellectual, more serious, more pure,” he added. “It’s a different, fresh, new way to see Julia - really cool and urban, I think.”

Julia was shot by iconic photographer duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott for the campaign, with Katy England styling her, Genevieve Herr helming make-up and Serge Normant tending to her tresses.

The star's pictures will be placed with other photos from a location shoot featuring models wearing further Givenchy pieces created by Riccardo.

“I like reality in campaigns. Today I think it’s very modern to be real,” Riccardo explained. “I don’t want to show only the clothes of the show, but also what you really sell... I think it’s a very honest campaign.”

Julia's ads will appear in various magazines, including Vogue and Love, from March next year.
