Kerry Washington: I made my maternity style

Kerry Washington and Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo had to work hard to keep her character stylish with a baby bump.

The gorgeous actress gave birth to her first child with her husband Nnamdi Asomugha, daughter Isabelle, in April. As she didn’t have time to slow down while pregnant, she continued to work as Olivia Pope on the political thriller show.

The show and the star are lauded for their sense of style, which saw Kerry honoured at the Accessories Council Excellence Awards event in New York earlier this week. While there, she revealed how creative she and costume designer Lyn Paolo got on set.

“It was really fun for Lyn and I, because there didn’t really exist a line out there… that was able to meet our needs in terms of the elevated level of fashion of [my character] Olivia Pope,” she explained to New York Post’s Page Six. “So we wound up inventing our own maternity wear and changing beautiful top-of-the-line clothes into maternity clothes.”

Lyn and Kerry received the Influencer award at the stylish event on Monday. The star was over the moon to be recognised by the Accessories Council.

"It’s such a huge honour. It means that all the fun that Lyn Paolo and I have been having in our little room for the past four years has people enjoying it, and that brings us even more joy," Kerry told WWD.

“From our very first phone call, we’ve been so on the same page and so passionate about this idea of reclaiming what power dressing looks like for a woman. We were taking it very seriously because we are passionate about fashion and passionate about storytelling, and passionate about how identity is expressed through clothing.”
