Kidman: Red carpet style has evolved
Nicole Kidman thinks red carpets weren’t as much of a big deal when she started out in Hollywood.
She made her Academy Awards debut in 1991, newly married to her then-husband Tom Cruise.
Holding onto the actor’s arm, the Moulin Rouge! star tottered down the red carpet in a velvet black mini dress with detail by her waist and wrists. It’s a far cry from her floor-length gowns of late and Nicole is incredulous at how much fashion has changed.
“My personal style has changed, I suppose, over the years because when I was starting out, we didn’t even have red carpets in the sense of what they are now,” she explained to British magazine Hello! Fashion.
“And I remember when I first went to the Oscars, I wore a tiny little Valentino dress. It was amazing and I still have it, but it’s a dress you wear when you’re 22 years old and are thinking, ‘Wow, let’s go to a party!’ It just happened to be the Oscars.”
The star began to “explore” with fashion when work started taking her around the world and she was able to forge bonds with international designers, naming John Galliano as one of the most influential.
This year Nicole didn’t attend the Oscars, but last year she stunned in a sequinned black and gold L’Wren Scott gown.
At 5ft 11., Nicole could pass for a supermodel and often towers over the men she dates. Her current husband Keith Urban and her ex Tom were both shorter than her, but it’s something that doesn’t faze her.
Speaking of men, she added she never judges them by their appearance, although she does like guys who wear a smart watch.
