Knightley: Lipstick is armour
Keira Knightley likes to break the rules when it comes to clothing.
The Imitation Game actress is currently expecting her first child with husband James Righton. While the sex of her baby hasn’t been revealed, if it’s a girl, Keira is likely to pass on the beauty advice she picked up from her own mother.
“Lipstick is an armour to the world. My mum had a thing when we were growing up, if she’d had a sh*t day or if something had gone wrong, she’d put her red lipstick on,” she told the British edition of Elle. “I still abide by that.”
The 29-year-old is the cover star of the magazines March issue and is shown wearing a bold red lip with her brown hair hanging loosely round her shoulders. It’s a look Keira swears by and she recommends other women try.
“If you’re doing something hard, a really vibrant colour is a good thing,” she said. “Lips are the easiest thing to put colour on. The nose doesn’t work so well – it’s a tricky look. Lips, however: quite good.”
While the star is happy to follow some beauty rules laid down by her mom, when it comes to clothes she isn’t as willing to conform. Her dislike for convention stems from childhood and is something she has embraced even more as an adult, regardless of being under the watchful eye of the fashion elite.
“Break the rules. I’ve always hated the idea that you should be wearing this or that, because it makes me feel like I’m getting everything wrong,” she explained. “I hated it at school, and I don’t want it as an adult. If you want to wear a f**king flowerpot on your head and that makes you happy, then wear a f**king flowerpot on your head.”
