La La Land costume designer dishes on movie’s outfits
La La Land costume designer Mary Zophres wanted women to be wooed by Ryan Gosling in the new film.
Emma Stone’s “beautiful neckline” and “graceful line” influenced her costumes in La La Land.
The flame haired star has once again teamed with Ryan Gosling, with their latest film generating plenty of Oscars buzz, despite not yet being released.
The story of a jazz musician and an aspiring actress is filled with musical numbers, and costume designer Mary Zophres added to the glamour with her creations.
“We designed everything she dances in,” Mary told The Hollywood Reporter. “She has a beautiful neckline, arms and such a graceful line, so that influenced the silhouette. We wanted the whole film to be classic-looking. The yellow dress even has matching underwear underneath.
“Her daytime clothes, we didn’t want them to be so high-end that it didn’t look like she’d buy them as a struggling actress.”
Mary hunted through the rails at vintage clothes shop Playclothes, pairing pieces with other items from high street stores like H&M. A Jason Wu dress makes an appearance too, which Emma wears at the end of the movie.
“It’s similar to a dress I saw Catherine Deneuve wearing in a photo where she’s looking over her shoulder,” Mary shared. “I had that photo pinned to my board, and I found the dress at Saks Fifth Avenue. It seemed right to have a store-bought dress for that scene, because she’s at a different point in her life. It’s a mature choice.”
Ryan looks dapper throughout too, evoking the sense of a bygone era in high waisted trousers and two-toned shoes.
"I wanted women in the audience to be wooed by Ryan, and the men to feel romantic about Emma," the costume designer smiled.
