Lagerfeld charms muse
Anna Calvi was in awe of Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld when they first met.
The Chanel designer is full of praise for the rising musician, insisting she has been a great source of inspiration to him. Anna was thrilled to meet the 80-year-old star and could instantly see why he is so well respected in the industry.
"He's charming," she told vogue.co.uk. "He commands so much respect. He has so many people around him, but still manages to control the room. I really like how straightforward he is, how he just says what he thinks."
Anna has been pictured on the front row of fashion shows and played at industry parties, including one held by Gucci. That was quite a challenge, although she enjoyed having a new experience.
"It does feel different," she explained. "People at fashion parties aren't there to listen to the music, so you really have to focus on engaging everyone. It's a very different audience."
The musician took a while to find her voice, even though she knew she wanted to sing. She struggled as she is quietly spoken and didn't feel she had the flamboyant personality she'd need to make it in the industry.
However, expressing herself through her stage costumes has helped. She can often be found dressed as a male flamenco artist when performing and believes it’s essential for artists to develop a strong look.
"It's important to make sure that your aesthetic is a bold as possible - it's a visual expression of what you do," she claimed. "Flamenco is about passion and romance and that, for me, felt like the right thing to reference."
