Lovato: Be natural and proud
Demi Lovato says she has learned to accept her body doesn’t define who she is.
The 22-year-old singer inspired her fans earlier this week when she posted a bikini snapshot of herself, proudly boasting that she doesn’t have a thigh gap.
And Demi said while it has taken her some time to accept her body shape, she now wants to help fans do the same.
"For some reason this whole thigh gap thing has kind of swept over what people think is beautiful," Demi told E! News. "And if you have that naturally then that's totally fine, you're still beautiful. But my body doesn't naturally have that. I wanted to show my fans out there who don't naturally have the thigh gap that it's okay. You don't have to have what you see in the magazines if that's not what your body naturally has.
"Your body is going to change, your looks are going to change, you're going to have great hair and makeup days, you're going to have bad hair and makeup days—it doesn't define who you are. At the end of the day, who you are is who people really see.”
Demi previously struggled with an eating disorder and went back to rehab last summer for further treatment.
But the star added in the interview that she looks to other female celebrities for inspiration when it comes to being a confident woman.
“Some of the women that really inspire me, I would say I've become really close with Jennifer Lopez," Demi said. "She's such a strong, confident woman that she's really helped me with learning that stuff and she's just such an inspirational person and so empowering and if there's anybody that's super radiant and confident, it's her."
