Lupita Nyong'o loves her lippy

Lupita Nyong'o has favored dark lipstick since she was young and likens finding the right barber to meeting the perfect man.

The Kenyan actress burst on to cinema screens last year in 12 Years a Slave. Her portrayal of enslaved cotton plantation worker Patsey earned her an Oscar and her numerous red carpet appearances at award ceremonies cemented her style icon status.

Lupita has always been into beauty, favouring a dark lip since she was a teenager.

“I’ve had a black lipstick in my bag literally since I was 17 - I’ve even worn it on the red carpet," Lupita revealed to Lucky magazine.

"I’d tell my mother, ‘It’s for the play!’ We’re a big performative family, so we were always putting up shows for each other, make-believe. Black lipstick is just instant drama. I always sought out drama - I played Juliet at 14 - though I don’t like it in my personal life. It’s more for the stage and screen."

As well as her flawless complexion Lupita is also instantly recognisable by her cropped hair.

The style came courtesy of barber Jay Johnson, based in Brooklyn. For Lupita, finding someone who cuts your hair to perfection is like finding the ideal guy.

“He cut a friend’s hair, and I was coveting it,” she revealed. “I love those visits. A barber... it’s like dating - you choose your man! He understands how my hair works."

“I use Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercreme when my hair is still damp, Afro-pick my hair and that’s it," she added.

When it comes to choosing outfits, 31-year-old Lupita's philosophy has been instilled by her mom Dorothy.

“My mother raised us always to dress as a sign of respect. Like, no ball gowns to the ball game. That’s still how I approach dressing," she divulged.
