Maisie Williams: I like shocking people
Maisie Williams says when it comes to her red carpet style, she enjoys “shocking people” by wearing a dress “to show people that I’m actually a girl”.
The 17-year-old actress, who is best known as scruffy tomboy Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, attended the show’s season five premiere in San Francisco on Monday night, where she revealed her strategy when it comes to dressing for the occasion.
The British star looked lovely in a soft pink dress with tulip-style skirt and silver strappy stilettos that accentuated her toned legs.
“I like shocking people just because, like, I can wear a dress too,” she explained to Entertainment Weekly. “Not even for people to go, ‘Oh she’s grown up,’ but to show people that I’m actually a girl. I’m just so scruffy on the show.”
While the teenager admitted to finding such premieres “a bit intense”, the star revealed she also has a game plan for dealing with the endless questions from reporters. Getting asked the same plot questions over and over becomes boring pretty quickly, so Maisie uses her wardrobe choices as a means to “distract” and provide another line of questioning.
“It’s helpful to have a handbag that’s a bit crazy, or shoes that have kiwis on them or something, because it distracts,” she wisely revealed.
However, there is an upside to such big events. Maisie relishes getting the opportunity to gather en masse with her massive ensemble cast, many of whom never shoot a single scene together. And not only that, but everyone’s looking their absolute best, which is a dramatic change for many of them, who film almost entirely in suits of armour.
“For the other cast members to see them come down stairs and it’s like: Everybody looks so good!” she smiled. “There’s [Gwendoline Christie] with her six-inch heels on, Sophie [Turner] giving everyone hair envy. For once, no one’s wearing armour.”
Season five of the hit HBO drama kicks off on April 12.
