Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen on PFW move

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have opened up about why they showed their latest The Row collection as part of Paris Fashion Week.

(Cover) - EN Star Style - Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have called their decision to show at Paris Fashion Week this season “strategic”.

The celebrity twins usually present their collections during the New York leg of show, but for Spring/Summer 16 they took to the city of love instead. The news came to light in August (15) and at the time no reason for the decision was given, but the pair have now explained why they made the change.

“It was a strategic decision,” Mary-Kate explained to The New York Times at The Row’s show on Tuesday (29Sep15).

Ashley added they had planned a large event to showcase the collection to international clients at the 17th-century Château de Courances, which is just outside Paris. The plan had been to do this alongside their usual New York event, but as time wore on they realised the venue in the French capital was much better than their Big Apple option. This led to the siblings deciding it would be easier all round, and more eye-catching, if they just put the show on at the same time as their planned soiree.

“Everyone’s going to see it on their phone soon, anyway,” Ashley explained. “For us, it’s much more about the experience than what city you’re in. Because the experience is what the client has when she’s wearing and buying clothes. So the experience is what we want to give people.”

The eventual show was held around an hour outside of Paris and so the designers decided against asking a plethora of press to attend. The schedule of Paris Fashion Week is jam packed, with editors usually having to race between events. It means a show which is a long way away could force them to miss other presentations.

As for the clothes, there were the usual ankle-length dresses and flowing tops, as well as evening gowns made from duchess satin. More interesting were the short shapes on offer, as the twins haven’t tended to go for mini lengths in the past. This time there were short tulle dresses and versions with sweetheart necklines.

The pair have hinted they will return to New York next season, to mark a decade in the industry. They are also itching to get started on the new looks.

“Well, we actually have been done with this collection for quite some time,” Mary-Kate revealed. “And if you show in New York, then you can move on to the next one faster. We’re ready.”
