McCarthy: I picked Elle coat
Melissa McCarthy insists she chose to wear an oversized coat on the cover of Elle.
The American actress features on the front page of the iconic magazine's November issue wearing an oversized teal piece. When the photo was revealed online critics slammed the publication for covering up the 43-year-old actress rather than highlighting her curves.
However, Melissa insists the item of clothing was her choice and she was happy to wear it over a stunning dress underneath.
"What I found so bizarre is I picked the coat," she told E! News at the Elle Women in Hollywood gala. "I had a great black dress on but I thought, it comes out in November. I was so sick of summer. I live in Southern California. I was like, 'Give me a big coat to wear. Give the girl some cashmere!'
"They were like, 'The dress is really great,' but I was like, 'Yeah, but look at this.' I was just shocked I didn't steal it. Now I think I really should have the coat. I'm petitioning for that coat. Give me that coat. I earned it, damn it!"
Elle was quick to defend the decision to let Melissa wear the extravagant piece. Publication bosses also praised the plus-size star, who is currently working on her own clothing collection for bigger women alongside dressmaker Daniella Pearl.
"On all of our shoots, our stylists work with the stars to choose pieces they feel good in, and this is no different: Melissa loved this look, and is gorgeous on our cover. We are thrilled to honour her as one of our Women in Hollywood this year," a statement read.
