Mel C: My style is no longer sporty

Mel C still shocks people with her femininity, as they tend to remember her Sporty Spice look.

The former Spice Girl was known as Sporty Spice and always wore gym clothes, with her hair tied back.

However, since the band split in 2000, Mel's had a style overhaul and now favours dresses and heels, with her tresses worn loose.

"Yeah, definitely, that's what people keep telling me [I'm getting better with age]. I just look older in the mirror, but people to seem to think I look different. I think people have an image of me with a ponytail and a tracksuit - and when they see me, they're like, 'Oh, you're actually quite feminine,'" she laughed to British magazine Now.

"I'm lucky I suppose. I'm hoping I've got good genes because my mum's aged beautifully and so did my nana, so fingers crossed."

Mel's a mum to five-year-old Scarlet and thinks British band Little Mix set a great style example for kids.

However, the 40-year-old doesn't think all pop stars' fashion choices are suitable for kids, and thinks it's laughable how much stick the Spice Girls got for their clothes.

"Culture is constantly evolving and when you look back to the Spice Girls, we were criticised for wearing crop tops, but if you compare what pop stars wear now to what we wore then, it's insane," she said. "But I don't think you can blame artists, I think it's a much wider cultural thing and Instagram and selfies go towards there being pressure on young girls to behave and look a certain way.

"We have responsibility as adults to protect our children from that. I'm not saying: 'Stop pop stars being sexy,' because it's a free world, but we also have responsibility to lead a healthy, well-adjusted generation of children growing up with good self-esteem. Also how men look at girls, it's a big knock-on effect."
