Michael Costello: 'Thanks for wearing my dress Beyonce!'
Laverne Cox didn't need any fittings for the Michael Costello dress she wore to the Billboard Music Awards.
Michael Costello has Beyonce to thanks for his big break.
The American designer came to the public’s attention after finishing fourth on Project Runway in 2010, and has quickly become the go-to designer for the A-list.
Rita Ora, Kesha and Jennifer Lopez have all worn his designs, but the star that really catapulted him into the big time was Beyonce when she wore a white lace dress of his to the 2014 Grammy Awards.
Michael had met the Halo singer’s stylist Ty Hunter at a party, though Michael wasn’t sure at first if the deal would happen.
“We showed him everything, even looks from a show that (hadn't happened) yet,” he recalled to Teen Vogue. “Of course you never know what’s going to be the look until they show up on the carpet and Beyonce is so top secret about everything. When we saw that look come out, it was a big breaking point for us and I think that really opened the door for us as a company and a business. I think it really made people take us more seriously in this competitive market.”
Proving his status as a celebrity favourite, Michael was behind countless looks at the recent Billboard Music Awards, dressing host Ciara, Meghan Trainor, and girl group Fifth Harmony for their performance.
“With this one, it was about a two week process. We’re kind of magical at our showroom and our atelier in that we can make something for someone in three or four hours,” he laughed.
Laverne stunned in a black dress with a plunging neckline, with Michael praising what an ideal customer the Orange Is the New Black actress was.
“Laverne’s dress came together, magically, with no fitting. Her body is phenomenal and we’ve dressed her a few times before,” he gushed.
“When we sent her the dress, (her stylist Christina Pacelli) sent me a picture back and said ‘Laverne is dying! This is our red carpet look!’ So we knew at least a day before the red carpet, that was going to be the look.”
