Model decathlete Tom’s giant leap onto the runway
It's a long jump from track and field to the catwalk but Ulster athlete Tom Reynolds has taken it all in his stride.
The 25-year-old full-time decathlete from Seahill, Co Down has just landed a massive international modelling contract — fronting the Armani/Reebok advertising campaign.
The new ad was previewed at Milan Fashion Week recently as part of Emporio Armani’s Autumn/Winter 2010 collection.
And tonight Tom will be under the spotlight again when he takes to the catwalk in St George’s Market in Belfast at the Magners Light Spring Into Summer event.
Tom, who is signed to local model agency Style Academy, also has a London-based sports agent, who heard that Armani/Reebok were looking for an athlete to model for their new collaboration.
Tom was introduced to the casting directors for the ad campaign and despite being one of hundreds of hopefuls applying for the job, he managed to secure the contract.
He said: “I couldn’t believe it when I was shortlisted for the final four of the Armani/Reebok joint venture,” he said.
“When I saw well-known athletes, such as Andy Turner, Britain’s number one hurdler, who represented England in the Olympics, I thought I didn’t stand a chance.
“When my agency phoned me to tell me I had got it, I was genuinely shocked.”
After taking part in Spring Into Summer, Tom will be back training again in preparation for this year’s Commonwealth Games in India in 2010.
“The money for the ad was great and it will certainly help towards the costs of going to the Commonwealth Games.
“It was such a brilliant experience and I must thank Tracey Hall, my agent in Belfast, for grooming me and giving me the opportunity to model at this year’s Spring Into Summer,” added Tom.
The new Armani/Reebok advertisement will be aired on television in the next few months. The collection will combine contemporary style with sporting excellence and advanced technology.
As well as shoes and trainers, the EA7 collection will also feature a range of clothes, to be unveiled shortly.
