Mulleavy sisters designing opera wear
Kate and Laura Mulleavy are to create opera costumes.
The sisters behind Rodarte are thrilled to have been asked to contribute to the Los Angeles Philharmonic production of Mozart's Don Giovanni. The opera is being staged in May and the siblings say it's a dream come true to be involved.
"It only took a few seconds to say yes," Laura told the Los Angeles Times. "My grandmother sang opera, and if she were alive today, this would be her proudest moment."
Christopher Alden is directing the opera, while Gustavo Dudamel is conducting and Frank Gehry is creating the set.
Kate and Laura are familiar with Gustavo's work and are delighted to be working in such close proximity to him.
"He's a larger-than-life figure in Los Angeles. It's amazing to see someone so artistic, doing something that you're not used to seeing, on a billboard here," they explained.
The pair have already started thinking of the shape their designs will take. They are keen to try out new styles and surprise people with their offerings.
"[The costumes] won't be oriented to a period in history but will be more abstract," they added.
Kate and Laura are no strangers to working on costumes, having created many of the looks featured in Oscar-winning movie Black Swan.
