Padma Lakshmi uses cranberry juice to drain fat from her body
Padma Lakshmi has revealed how she fends off cravings for food in the middle of the night.
TV host Padma Lakshmi keeps her "pipes clean" by downing a disgusting cranberry concoction.
The 45-year-old star has to sample a lot of food as part of her job as host of U.S. reality cooking programme Top Chef, and maintaining a slim frame while eating so many delicious dishes is quite a challenge for her. But she manages to remain trim by exercising regularly and consuming bizarre health drinks.
"After spending an hour and a half at the gym boxing, doing calisthenics and walking at a high incline on a treadmill, I’ll drink something revolting-tasting that I call 'Cranberry Drano'," she tells the New York Post. "I came up with it myself, and it’s a combination of Lakewood brand 100 per cent cranberry juice, Tazo green tea, a sachet of Emergen-C (which contains vitamins and electrolytes) and a fiber powder such as Metamucil.
"I tend to drink this concoction three or four times a day when filming Top Chef and once a day when I’m not. It keep the pipes clean."
Although some people might cringe at the thought of incorporating nasty beverages into their diet, Padma has grown used to doing things like this, and over the years she has become quite disciplined about what and when she eats.
"Whether I go out to dinner or eat at home, arriving at the table not starving helps me make better choices and be more disciplined," she explained. "I usually have dinner around 7:30pm with my six-year-old daughter, Krishna."
"Unfortunately, I’m a hungry person and can often be tempted at night, especially after my daughter has gone to bed and I’ve returned to work for a couple of hours, checking email, etc.," Padma adds before revealing how she deals with cravings.
"Here’s a real secret: I have a tiny fridge in my bedroom in which I keep water and some discontinued lipsticks - MAC stopped making my favourite shade, so I stockpiled it. I also have a couple small bottles of vanilla Muscle Milk protein shakes in there. Each bottle is just 210 calories. If I’m thinking of going down to the kitchen to get something to eat (in the middle of the night), I will try one of those first, wait 10 minutes, close my eyes and, hopefully, fall asleep."
