Patti Smith: New Pirelli Calendar is striking

Patti Smith and Tavi Genvison reveal how honoured they feel to be part of the 2016 Pirelli Calendar.

Every year Pirelli produce a calendar full of some of the world’s most beautiful models, wearing provocative and daring, barely-there outfits.

However this year photographer Annie Leibovitz is lensing the shots, and has decided to go in a completely new direction. Patti is joined by some of the strongest women on the planet, including Amy Schumer, Yoko Ono and Serena Williams.

“I’ve seen a few of the photographs and they’re striking. I have no idea what the average recipient would [think], but I think that they should appreciate a bold move. We’ll see,” Patti pondered to US Vogue.

Patti, 68, who has been shooting with famed Annie since the ‘70s, jumped at the chance to be involved.

“I was very surprised that I was asked, and I was very proud that I was asked, and I think that Annie is doing something unique and different, and Pirelli is making a bold move. I look at Annie’s project not as a protest, but as a celebration,” she explained.

Annie previously shot the calendar in 2000, and got the idea for next year’s (16) offering by thinking about the role women play in society.

It will be available from November 30 (15), with all shots taken in a studio instead of on location.

“This calendar is so completely different. It is a departure. The idea was not to have any pretence in these pictures and be very straightforward,” Annie revealed.

Multi-talented American star Tavi Gevinson, 19, a style blogger, actress and singer, is also making an appearance, showing off a new pixie cut just for the shoot.

“I feel completely unworthy. I’m honoured. I think it’s amazing to be a part of this group of women who are being celebrated for so many different things in something that’s traditionally celebrating one thing - which is also great!” she gushed.
