Pharrell Williams says it was singer Kelis who got him to wear Prada and Gucci.
The 40-year-old producer and style icon is enjoying a career high at the moment, in both his music and his fashion lines.
Pharrell hasn't always been so stylish and recalls how he first got into fashion around 15 years ago.
"I'd just signed this girl called Kelis, and back then all I wore was Ralph Lauren's Polo, because that was the thing. And Kelis turned to me and said, 'You've got to get out of this box,'" he laughed to UK Vogue magazine. "She introduced me to Prada and Gucci. It was thanks to Kelis I discovered a life outside of monograms."
The superstar recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of his clothing brand Billionaire Boys Club and its more affordable action-sports line Ice Cream. The huge success of these pursuits ensures Pharrell will be expanding the lines into other areas like footwear, accessories, fragrance and eyewear in the future.
The modest star admits he's overwhelmed by the response to his lines.
"It's insane," Pharrell continued. "I'm just a details man."
Pharrell teamed up with model-of-the-moment Cara Delevingne for the Vogue photoshoot. The trendsetter helped pick out the clothes for the British model and complimented her on her "depth" and "spirit".
The pair were lensed by photographer David Bailey, who Pharrell praised in a behind-the-scenes video from the shoot.
"David Bailey's faces and sounds - he makes some pretty wild faces," Pharrell gushed. "He's a genius, but that's his work isn't it?"
