Rooney Mara 'suffered' in ripped costume

Rooney Mara "really suffered" on the set of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo because she was so slim.

The actress portrays troubled computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in the highly-anticipated thriller. She stars alongside Daniel Craig, who plays journalist Mikael Blomkvist.

Daniel felt sorry for Rooney when they were shooting the movie in Sweden because of the cold weather conditions. The star underwent a dramatic transformation for the role, which including shedding many pounds.

Daniel says Rooney braved the elements despite her lack of weight and clothing.

"[The weather] was OK, though it must have been tough on Rooney. The poor girl was probably 91lbs. when she was doing this movie because she was working out every day and dieting," he explained in an interview with Shortlist magazine.

"She was waif-like because her character is that way, so she wasn't carrying an awful lot of fat to keep her warm. Her jeans had lots of rips in them and her costume was pretty thin. She really suffered."

Rooney's dramatic make-over for the role included a complete hair restyle that involved shaving off her long longs, piercings and body art.

The 26-year-old star was happy to undergo the transformation.

"I was very happy to cut my hair off. It made it easier to get into the character. I was happy to get rid of it. Really I was," she previously insisted.
