Rose Byrne: I love New Yorkers' slick style

Rose Byrne is into “power dressing” since playing a lawyer in Damages.

The actress hails from Australia but has travelled a great deal for work.

Her show Damages, in which she plays a lawyer, was shot in the Big Apple, which meant she had plenty of time to appreciate the city’s sense of style.

“When I moved to New York to start filming Damages, I found the US fashion scene so polished and slick by contrast,” she marvelled to the latest edition of British InStyle magazine.

“Although there are edgy little pockets, like Brooklyn, it’s not as alternative as London. The outfits worn by my lawyer character in the show, Ellen Parsons, got me into power dressing.”

For Damages, Rose was put in clothing by the likes of Bottega Veneta and Reed Krakoff. However, if needs must, she’s happy to lend a hand to the styling at work.

“Putting together a new character’s costume is always a lot of fun,” she smiled.

“If I’m doing a low-budget film, I sometimes bring in a few of my own things. Obviously my character in Bridesmaids was a great role; the costume designer, Leesa Evans, has become a dear friend.

“Once I’ve finished shooting I don’t tend to keep anything as it’s nice just to step back into being me for a while.”

When she was 22, the star saved up for her first big purchase: a Max Mara coat. However, she hasn’t always had a finger on the style pulse.

“I grew up in Australia with two older sisters whose clothes I stole and copied unashamedly,” she laughed, adding her worst look consisted of Lycra cycling shorts and baggy band T-shirts.
