Salma Hayek unveils edible beauty line

Salma Hayek grew up using foods in her kitchen as facial products.

Salma Hayek has launched her own line of edible beauty products.

The Frida actress has teamed up with company Juice Generation on a range called Blend It Yourself, featuring 12 smoothies, three acai bowls and three 'Beauty Blends' which customers can mix and use as either a smoothie or face mask.

"The things that work for your face really can also work from the inside-out. We combined some ingredients so if you don't put it on your face and drink it, it's still good for your skin," Salma told WWD.

"To me, beauty always started in the kitchen or in the bathroom... (My grandmother) would be at the breakfast table and take papaya and put orange juice in it and honey and stick it on her face. She would blend the nuts, stick it in there and scrub her face with it and leave it on as a mask. And that's it. That's how I grew up."

One mix, called 'Aloe Greens', contains kale, aloe vera, spinach, cucumber, pear, mint, nopal cactus and avocado and is sold as a formula for repair.

Juice Generation founder Eric Helms was thrilled to collaborate with the Oscar-nominated star and recalled the moment in which he first tested out one of her offerings.

"She started mixing up coconut with papaya and greens. She came over and slathered greens all over my face. This is something she's been doing for years. She said, 'Trust me, all of my friends do this. I give the recipes out,'" he laughed.

The pair has worked together for some time now, having previously created juice range Cooler Cleanse back in 2008 before embarking on other ventures.

Blend It Yourself will be available on Juice Generation's official website from 13 June (17).
