Sam Smith: CK are dressing me for tour
Sam Smith has chosen Calvin Klein Collection to design suits for his performances in North America.
The British singer is becoming a global phenomenon thanks to his soulful voice and dapper image, and it seems his fame is paying off as he has teamed up with the designer label.
Sam's stops will include Chicago and Seattle, and he will boast suits created by the brand’s men’s creative director, Italo Zucchelli. The designer will also dress the musician's band.
Each ensemble is inspired by Sam's own mantra, 'simple, classic and timeless,' and the 22-year-old feels his onstage outfits are a big part of his performances.
“Fashion hugely influences my music. When I wrote my record, I had to think very deeply how I wanted to represent myself," he told WWD. "I wanted people to focus on the music and I wanted my clothes to marry my music and work hand-in-hand. I also wanted to look classic, but look my age, yet at the same time, ageless."
His two-piece creations will come in muted colours and include styles such as a dark grey microcheck, a navy number with a large check and a two-button notch-lapel slim fitting in navy. All these will be made from wool and Italo stuck to the briefing while coming up with ideas.
“We wanted him to look smart and classic,” the fashion expert explained. “I didn’t want to go crazy with a fashion statement. I like that because in this case, it’s all about his voice and that’s what it’s about."
The star may stand at 6ft 4in but Italo opted to give him "platform-ish" footwear.
Overall there's one person who Sam wants to reflect with his spruce appearance.
"[Frank Sinatra is] my fashion icon,” he smiled. “He let his clothes showcase his voice. He wore the simplest clothes, but at the same time, the most complex. His style forced you to listen to his voice, but it was his clothes and style that helped make his music sound like dollar bills.”
