Serena Williams: I love killer curves

Serena Williams is happy that curves are "popular" at the moment.

The tennis star is renowned for her voluptuous and athletic shape. She graces the cover of Essence magazine's July Body Issue and looks stunning in a strapless blue ombré swimsuit by Carmen Marc Valvo. Serena is happy to flaunt her fabulous figure and wants more people to be proud of their curves.

"It can be a bit weird. Before it was, 'Serena has a big butt,' and that was all," Serena told the magazine. "Now there are way more people who feel comfortable with themselves and they're saying, 'I'm a woman, and this is what I look like.' I always say, 'We're popular now! We're finally in style!'"

Serena stands at 5ft 9ins and is a healthy 155 pounds. During the interview, she covers a range of topics from dealing with self-esteem issues, ageing and learning to embrace her shapely figure.

The star strikes a confident pose for the accompanying photoshoot and insists it is important to "look in the mirror and say I love myself".

Serena also speaks about her health in the special issue - for which she is guest editor - after suffering a pulmonary embolism in 2011. The 31-year-old has fought back to full fitness and as the current number one female tennis player in the world, she has no plans to slow down any time soon.

“I feel lighter, I feel healthier, and even though I’m 31- which really isn’t old, but for an athlete, particularly a tennis player, it’s old - I promise you, my body has never felt better," she explained. "Considering how much I’ve played and how much I’ve done, I feel fine. I’m strong..."
