Shay Mitchell: 'Don't let Photoshop distort your image'

Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell has again touched upon how she'd alter her Filipino appearance to fit in with her peers when she was younger.

Actress Shay Mitchell used to compare herself to other girls in magazines, until she realised many photos are edited.

The Pretty Little Liars star always looks flawless while in the spotlight thanks to her carefully applied make-up and slender physique. Despite her evident beauty, Shay previously found herself trying to match up to other women in order to fit in.

"I know I used to compare myself to a lot of girls in magazines, but after being in the industry, you realise that there is a lot that goes into these photos," she told instyle.com. "I'm not against it by any means, but you do need to realise that the images out there have been Photoshopped and edited by professionals, so don't come down on yourself too much if you have a stretch mark here and there."

She may be a photo pro but the brunette beauty doesn't have a key for the perfect selfie, advising snap-happy fans to take "five thousand" pictures as she never succeeds on her first attempt.

Shay's desire to fit in with the crowds began when she was younger, as she previously revealed the lengths she'd go to in order to appear the same as her peers. During her latest interview, the brunette beauty - who is half-Filipino - again discussed that period in her life.

"I would tell myself to celebrate the fact that I was different, and to embrace what made me different and unique," she said when asked what advice she could give to her teenage self. "Growing up a different race in a predominantly Caucasian neighbourhood, all of my friends had fair complexions with blonde hair and blue eyes. I look back on my photos and I'm completely different. I dyed my hair lighter, I wore colour contacts, I didn't want to be out in the sun."

As she's got older Shay, now aged 28, has discovered what her natural looks can do for her, and she's currently the celebrity face of skincare brand Biore. After getting coated up in cosmetics for a day of work the star claims she loves nothing more than applying a face mask and exfoliating several times a week to keep her skin in good condition.
