SJP: SATC wasn’t just fashion

Sarah Jessica Parker has learned a lot from her footwear business partner.

As well as thrusting Sarah into the limelight as an actress, the hit HBO show also introduced her as style icon.

By the time the series wrapped in 2004 the 49-year-old was a certified fashionista. Many of the iconic looks were down to costume designer Patricia Field, but Sarah insists there's more to the show than just wardrobe.

“I feel enormously lucky that I got to be part of something that people connected with. It created a relationship [with viewers] — one that we could never have planned. I know the clothes are important and helped tell the story so well, so beautifully, so cleverly, but you can’t hang your hat on that forever. It’s the writing and the stories we got to tell," Sarah explained to WWD.

As well as the TV series there have also been two successful movies, as well as numerous other film projects that Sarah has starred in.

On top of her acting commitments Sarah has turned her hand to design too, and she launched her debut SJP footwear collection with upscale retailer Nordstrom in February. The line has gone from strength to strength, and along with business partner George Malkemus, Sarah is loving every minute.

“I’ve learned an enormous amount from George. It’s been an education, and it’s been so satisfying,” she smiled.

"[The Nordstrom tours have] been a fantastic experience. In [film and TV], I develop relationships, but they’re not personal in that I rarely meet the audiences as I have on these shoe tours. A lot of these women have come to support this brand because of the relationship we’ve cultivated over the last 15 or 20 years. So it’s the first [chance] I’ve had for one-on-one time. It’s been such a nice experience to meet the customer and have a moment with her — or him.”
