Tavi Gevinson: Love split brought style

Tavi Gevinson said it took dumping her high-school sweetheart to rediscover fashion.

The 18-year-old started blog Style Rookie in 2008 and its popularity saw her invited to sit front row at New York and Paris Fashion Week. She went on to write for Harper's Bazaar and Barneys and styled a shoot for BlackBook magazine.

With so much going on in her life, the star decided to break up with her high-school sweetheart, saying it was out of "love and respect".

"Coming out of the breakup has kind of reignited my love for fashion, because it’s a way of asserting a new identity and becoming a new person and giving yourself space," she explained to New York magazine's The Cut.

And luckily she had a celebrity friend experienced in matters of the heart on hand to soothe her.

“I flew straight to New York for a wedding, and then I visited Taylor Swift at her home in Rhode Island. I hate being heartbroken, but who better to discuss it with than Taylor Swift?” she smiled.

Tavi's acting career is going from strength to strength. She starred in 2013 drama Enough Said and will appear on Broadway in This Is Our Youth opposite Michael Cera.

When everything kicked off for the star and she was invited to attend fashion events around the world, Tavi realised she could never go back to her ordinary life.

“I was like, 'This is it. I got this one cool experience, and now I’m back to middle school, where I was made fun of for what I wore,'" she remembered about leaving Fashion Week.

"I’m sure I wasn’t the most pleasant classmate. I was very opinionated, and I was just discovering riot grrrls.”
