Thandie Newton wants her ThandieKay website to appeal to all women.
The RocknRolla actress has teamed up with make-up artist Kay Montano to create ThandieKay. Their project is about "liberation, celebration and living life to the full" by embracing beauty inside and out.
Kay wanted to follow in the footsteps of online American magazine Rookie, which is in the style of a blog for teenage girls, but made sure their website attracted women of all races.
"It's not a 'mixed race' site. We're not going to exclude anybody. In America, there's a strong - I wouldn't call it a subculture, it's somewhere in between subculture and mainstream - culture online," Kay told theguardian.com.
While the pair encourage females from all backgrounds to use ThandieKay they have noticed women from different descents use it more frequently. Kay believes Thandie used her upbringing - she was raised in a rural community as a mixed race individual - to contribute to the venture.
"We had different experiences of being mixed-race in this country. Thandie grew up in Cornwall - her parents met in Ghana - with her little brother, and there were no other black people around," she explained. "She has a heightened awareness - you don't have the luxury of just being able to instantly belong. In the 1970s and 1980s, nobody of colour or mixed race could grow up in a better place."
Overall the duo hope ThandieKay will ooze confidence and make users look at their appearance in a different light. Kay doesn't want women to feel pressured into changing their looks and simply wants to make new suggestions.
"Beauty is the Trojan horse. The whole idea of beauty as a ritual has been completely taken over by the idea that you're just doing it to attract men, or to look younger, or that you're buying into regressive ideas, or that you're not a feminist," she stated. "It's a lot of baggage. But men do it, animals do it. We're not going to get into the arguments, we're just going to present ideas."
