Theo James didn't simply want to look like a "f**king beefcake" in Divergent.
The 29-year-old hunk takes on the role of Four in the sci-fi franchise, which also stars Shailene Woodley. He's looking buff in the first instalment, but insists there was more to it than simply bulking up.
"I had to put on a lot of weight, in terms of muscle," he explained to the UK edition of ELLE magazine. "I wanted my character to have a dynamic masculinity and not just look like a f**king beefcake."
The actor will reprise his role in second movie Insurgent and the final instalment Allegiant, which has been split into two parts.
Initially, he thought shaping up to play Four would be a relatively easy process. However, the star wasn't quite prepared for how much he would have to step up his workout regime.
"It was quite funny because I can kind of consider myself fairly in shape. I've done some martial arts and boxing before," Theo explained to Total Film magazine.
"But when we were doing the costume fitting, I was in a T-shirt and we were trying on jackets, I was like, 'So you know, probably kind of in my shape, right?' Neil was like, 'Nah, it's going to be much more powerful'. I said, 'Oh sh*t...' I literally ran to the gym and spent a month there."
The actor added that while the films look set to be huge, he hasn't yet had to deal with "screaming" fans such as Twilight star Robert Pattinson's followers.
