will.i.am: I bought dollar clothes

will.i.am used to buy a whole new wardrobe with just $10.

The 39-year-old star's look is a distinct one and he often sports quirky glasses and futuristic pieces. He's managed to gain a reputation in the world of fashion and it was his desperation to avoid leftovers which helped him put together his aesthetic.

“I guess I have a unique style. My style came from the fact my family were poor growing up – so we had to make the best use we could out of second hand shops," he explained to the Scottish Daily Record.

“apl.de.ap [will's Black Eyed Peas bandmate] and I would have $10 to go sort out our wardrobe.

“So we would go to the store on Dollar Day, which was Saturday, and we’d get there early because we didn’t want to get scraps – and that’s how I found my style."

The two musicians have been close pals since they were youngsters, and they were determined to make it big from the very beginning.

“I was hyper as a kid. apl and I were always ‘practising’ music. From age 15 to 22 we would get together and dance, free style, write raps. We were talking about it the other day and laughing like, ‘What the hell were we practising for?’" will grinned.

Not only did will's musical talents eventually become recognised but his eye for style has also got him far. Last year he launched an eyewear line called ill.i Optics with Australian designer George Gorrow, inspired by the 80s hip-hop scene.

"There are many ways to go about having a line of glasses out there, but this way is the most honest, and shows the dedication and passion when it’s your own," will explained in a promotional video for the range.
