Zoe Saldana: I prefer poignant fashion

Zoe Saldana doesn't like straying from her "hard and poignant" signature style.

The actress looked gorgeous at the Cosmopolitan for Latinas launch party in New York City last week wearing a blush coloured Elie Saab dress.

However, Zoe admits she was initially unsure about the pretty piece.

"This took years for [stylist Petra Flannery] to get me to wear - feminine, pretty colours and pastel," she explained to FabSugar. "I always want things to be hard and poignant but sometimes, you need these things because they mellow you out."

Zoe - who admits she's "not a pink girl" - has faith in her expert stylist. The 33-year-old star says Petra takes the stress of choosing a red carpet ensemble away completely.

"She is my must-have," she revealed. "I work so hard and I am nonstop that sometimes taking time to think about what I am going to wear is overwhelming."

Zoe describes her style as "unexpected" and "emotional." The star wowed in a purple Givenchy gown at the 2010 Oscars, and claims when she has her heart set on wearing something, she has to follow her gut feeling.

"Everybody and their mommas told me and Petra that might be a little bit too much. It was a shocker for some and some people needed to be revived after they saw it on the red carpet," she smiled.

"I was happy and I felt like the most beautiful girl in the world that night. And that's all I care about."
