Elvis & Nixon review: The president meets the King
In December 1970, Elvis Presley (Michael Shannon) is horrified by the anarchy he sees on his TV screen and compels his good friend Jerry Schilling (Alex Pettyfer) to join him on a madcap odyssey to Washington DC.
Against the odds, President Nixon (Kevin Spacey) considers Presley's outrageous request to be made a Federal Agent to dissuade America's youth from experimenting with drugs.
Elvis & Nixon is an amusing and outlandish dramatisation of a real meeting between the pair. There are no records of the men's conversation so the scriptwriters have free rein.
Both Shannon and Spacey pickpocket their opportunities for scenery-chewing, not least when the singer first enters the Oval Office and ransacks the President's private supply of soft drinks and candy.
