Orchestra's taste of the exotic

Ulster Orchestra Ulster Hall Tonight 7.45pm

Published 21/10/2016

As part of the orchestra's continuing subscription series, included in this year's Belfast Festival, tonight's concert is called Exotic Storytellers. Rimsky Korsakov's Sheherazade easily fits the bill, as one of the most exotic tone poems ever written about the famous storyteller herself.

But it is in Les Nuits d' Ete by Hector Berlioz that actual words come into the picture. Telling the story tonight is the excellent young Irish mezzo-soprano Rachel Kelly, who has a close connection to Belfast through her well-known musical mother, Una Hunt. Rachel is already making a name for herself internationally and this is her first solo appearance with the Ulster Orchestra. Jac van Steen conducts the programme, which opens with Ravel's popular Pavane pour une infante defunte.

Tickets cost £28-£10 from the box office, tel: 028 9033 4455 or visit
