Renowned hypnotherapist Joseph Pond on how mindfulness can help make you healthier and happier

I wrote last week about how what I call your internal senses can interrupt your mindfulness practice.

Today, I want to talk about the sense that is most important in building one’s reality: namely, the visual.

I say this because what we focus on is of paramount importance. Over the years, it’s become evident that some clients improve, while some don’t. I wondered why this would be.

Ultimately, it comes down to the inescapable truth that people who improve faster simply are better at focusing on different things.  

For example, I’ve had clients who come back the next week and say, “Nothing’s changed”. But when I go through the symptoms they gave me the week before, often they’ll admit, “Well, actually, it’s not as bad”.

By way of contrast, people who are very good at making changes will bounce in and say, “I’m not 100% yet, but I definitely see positive effects, and I’m excited to keep going.”

So whether you are doing mindfulness or not, listen to this: LOOK FOR DIFFERENCES! 

Even if you are practicing daily for 15-20 minutes, you are probably not going to transcend all time and space in the next seven days.  Believe it or not, some people get discouraged by this.

What you can do instead is train yourself to see the small signs everywhere which indicate that a steady incline of improvement has begun.  Believe me, they will be there if you look.

Because you get more of what you focus on, it’s just smart to focus on what you do want rather than what you don’t want. You can say to yourself, “Relax”, but if you immediately interject with, “No, I’m not relaxed at all.  My neck is still tense”, then of course you won’t relax.

Instead, if you pay attention to the results you are seeking, you’ll begin to direct your life along the trajectory that you want it to follow. 

That doesn’t mean your problems will disappear. 

You’ll still have to do your taxes. 

You still have to take action.

But consciously deciding to look for and focus on what’s good is an action. 

It’s the first step.
