Jake Carter: 'I like to stay as fit as possible - you have to in my job'

Me and my health: Jake Carter

By Helen Carson

Following in the footsteps of his famous chart topping brother Nathan, Jake Carter (18) is making a name for himself with his own blend of country/pop/rock. Currently recording his debut album, he will be appearing at the new Harvest 2017 Country Music Festival at Enniskillen Airport in August and will be touring Northern Ireland in October

Do you take regular exercise - and if so, what?

I try to go to the gym four or five times a week if I am not gigging. I also play five-a-side football once a week. I like to stay as fit as possible - you need to keep in shape in my job. I will probably spend about an hour and a half working out in the gym and then half an hour in the steam and sauna. Sometimes though, with my job it can be hard, especially if you are gigging and you can't get to the gym. If I am gigging I will still try and do at least two workouts a week. If I miss the gym for a couple of weeks I usually feel terrible and it is always great to get back into a routine again. My work is usually at night and going to the gym is good for me mentally, as well as giving me something to do during the day. Working at night, you have your days free and if I didn't go to the gym I would probably just be sitting around talking on the phone all day.

What's been your worst illness?

Touch wood, I haven't had any bad illnesses or broken any bones. I did have a very straightforward operation on my ear when I was about 12. It was to treat an hereditary condition - a perforated ear drum which is just a small hole in the ear, which doesn't affect your hearing but could get infected if you go swimming. It wasn't very serious. Nathan had the same operation just a couple of months ago.

How healthy is your diet?

I suppose it depends on what time of the year it is. I try to eat as healthily as I can and I would go through stints of not eating certain things, like cutting bread out for two weeks, or different carbs or chocolate. In my job it can be hard because when you finish a gig at night, often the only places open to eat are fast food places or petrol stations. When I am at home I try to make up for not always eating as well as I should when on tour.

Any bad habits?

Chocolate would be a killer for me and every now and again I over-indulge. Christmas is always a tough time, because there is so much food around.

Do you drink/and or smoke - and if so how much?

I don't smoke and I don't think I ever would. I like the odd drink, probably once a week. I enjoy a night out whenever I can get it and my tipple would be vodka.

Do you take health supplements?

I don't take any supplements. I did try protein powders once, but I like to stick to eating protein and getting it naturally. I would try to eat steak or chicken for protein and I always have eggs every morning for breakfast.

How do you take time out?

I switch off when I am in the gym. My manager would always have phoned me just as I got into the gym and now I switch my phone off and that's my time out. I also like to go to the cinema if I have a night off.

How well do you sleep?

I sleep really well. I always try to get eight hours' sleep. When I am gigging I usually don't get to bed until 2am or 3am and sometimes it can be 7am if we are travelling. No matter what time I get to bed, I will plan to sleep for eight hours. Sometimes if you are staying in a hotel and have to check out at 11am it doesn't always work that way. I can be quite grumpy if I don't get my sleep.

Do you worry about getting old?

It is not something I ever think about, not yet anyway.

What is your go-to product/habit that keeps you feeling healthy?

Recently I tried Bootea, which is like green tea. You have one in the morning and another one at night, and I thought it was brilliant. It is like a mini detox drink which flushes out all your toxins. I felt really healthy when I was taking that. I also drink plenty of water - I will always have a bottle of water in my hand. I do try to look after myself. As a singer, you have to look fit and feel fit.
