Me and my health: Caroline Fleck on her lifestyle
The 45-year-old Downtown Radio presenter splits her time between her home in Coleraine and Chicago, where her partner, Tom Fuller lives. She has a son, Jack Crawford (18) from a previous marriage and a daughter Molly (3) with Tom.
Q: Do you take regular exercise - and if so what?
A: My habit of doing zero exercise is about to change this year. Having gone back to full-time work and having a young child leaves me with little time to exercise. However, I am doing the FitBit challenge with my friend Carey, who lives in the Cayman Islands. Thanks to technology we can compete with each other in terms of the number of steps, running or walking we do daily because of the FitBit.
Q: What's the worst illness you have had?
A: Gestational type 2 diabetes when I was expecting Molly which could not only have harmed me but my unborn child as well. Type 2 diabetes is on the rise and it's more serious than some think - it can kill you. While I don't have it now I know that I'm predisposed to it. As an older mother I'm more aware of my mortality - I will be 60 when Molly is 18 and going to university, so I want to live as long as I can.
Q: How healthy is your diet?
A: I love chocolate and have about three bars a week - Curly Wurlys are a favourite of mine. I do eat fruit and veg and have a home cooked meal for dinner. However, over the past year my once a month takeaway is now once a week. I also have a sedentary life, commuting for three hours a day and sitting for four hours in a studio which has to change.
Q: Any bad habits?
A: I eat too much sugar, and drink too much caffeine. I'm also a social smoker which started last year. When I'm out having a glass of wine I will have a cigarette although I never smoke at home. Skipping breakfast is another one as I'm up at 5.30am, leave Molly to my mum's at 6.30am then I'm into the studio. In fact, I haven't eaten since 6pm yesterday at 6pm - I should be as thin as Victoria Beckham.
Q: Do you drink and/or smoke - if so, how much?
A: I would drink about a bottle and a half of red wine at the weekend.
Q: Do you take any health supplements?
A: I take 6,000 mg vitamin C tablets daily and haven't had a cold since. It also helps with back and joint aches and pains. I also take garlic capsules for cholesterol and a vitamin D supplement.
Q: How do you take time out?
A: Travelling, catching up with friends and family. Spending quality time with the kids. Because we live on the north coast we get out for walks when the weather is nice, or just chill out in front of the TV if it's not.
Q: How well do you sleep?
A: Not well as Molly was waking every other hour for a while and I'm the sort of mother whose mind doesn't switch off. Things have improved though over the last year since I went back to work full-time and I'm in a routine.
Q: Do you worry about getting old?
A: Not for me so much as for my kids, as I'm an older mum to Molly. And yes aesthetically I want to look fabulous at 70 and would consider Botox or getting a nip and tuck. There is no point complaining about looking older and being unhappy when the technology is there and if you can afford it, why not?
Q: What is your go-to product/habit that keeps you feeling healthy?
A: Drinking water which helps you feel better in every way possible. If you don't do anything else you should stay hydrated.
