When it comes to shedding the pounds, you need more carrot and less stick

Recently, I wrote about a new 21-day weight-loss mentoring programme that I’m launching soon called the T.H.I.N. Method. Today, I thought I’d explain the ‘H’ in the T.H.I.N. Method.

‘H’ stands for ‘history’ and represents everything you’ve tried to in the past. It represents all the beliefs that you have about yourself, which may be helping or hindering your success. Included in your personal history is something we call ‘meta-programmes’.

Meta-programmes are tendencies for individuals to respond in predictable ways, like whether one is an introvert or extrovert. They tend to be pretty consistent over time and one of the most relevant to weight loss is the “Direction Filter”.

This filter determines whether you are more motivated by the carrot or the stick. In other words, do you avoid what you don’t want, or do you work to achieve what you do want? If you wait until the doctor orders you to lose weight or else, we would say you are more motivated to move away from pain.

In the area of weight-loss, having an “away from” motivation strategy is not so good. Let’s say, one day, you find that you’re 13 stone and scream, “God, I’m too fat. I need to get back to 12 stone.”

The problem with being away from in this context is that the moment you weigh a smidgen less than 13 stone, you’ll find yourself less motivated.

A “towards” strategy is the opposite. The closer you get to your goal, the more motivated you become. We’ll teach you in the T.H.I.N. Method workshop how to incorporate and balance both strategies.

Try this on for size: spend a moment thinking about what will happen if you keep on doing the same failed things in life. Make the results bad enough so that you actually shudder. Now stop and fantasise about how incredible your future will be after you achieve your goals. This time, make it good enough so that you practically salivate.

Practice doing this daily and you’ll find yourself pulled towards what you want, while being propelled away from what you don’t want.
