Joanne Cushenan and Francis McKee from Downpatrick have welcomed a son into the world. Francis Liam McKee weighed 8lbs 10oz when he was born at the Ulster Hosptial in Dundonald on June 29 at 7.10pm.

Parents Joanne (31) and Francis (30), both civil servants, were thrilled to meet their son.

"He was a surprise," Joanne said.

"I had a feeling it was a girl so I was completely surprised and shocked.

"He is absolutely beautiful. He looks like his daddy."

Joanne praised the staff the Ulster Hospital for the care they provided.

"Everyone was absolutely lovely," she said.

"It wasn't an easy labour. They were all so helpful and considerate, so professional and lovely.

"I couldn't speak highly enough about them."

Joanne and Francis have been inundated with messages of congratulations since their son, a first grandchild for Joanne's side of the family, was born.

"Everyone is very happy," she said.

"We want to thank all our friends and family for their support."

The couple is enjoying the challenges of parenthood and look forward to watching little Francis thrive and develop as the days and weeks pass.

"It's brilliant," Joanne said.

"He is such a good wee baby.

"We've took to it really well and are looking forward to the future with our wee baby boy."
