Just Married: Matthew and Lillian McKibbin -Eastern promise that turned into the dream wedding
Matthew and Lillian McKibbin from east Belfast are enjoying married live after they fell in love in Japan four years ago.
Northern Woman magazine intern Lillian (26), originally from Los Angeles, and Matthew (29), a constituency and communications manager for Judith Cochrane MLA, met on a teaching programme in August 2010.
They became engaged in July 2012.
"We were doing the long-distance thing and he was visiting me in Japan for two weeks," Lillian said. "He completely surprised me on the 4th of July, American Independence Day.
"He took me to the beach where we had our first date.
"The diamond was taken from his mother's engagement ring, he had it reset in a new band."
The couple married on May 26 at Bloomfield Presbyterian Church in east Belfast.
"It was beautiful," Lillian said.
"Matt's pastor Frank did the service, he was just great.
"And we had a video of my grandmother doing one of the readings."
A reception followed at the Galgorm Hotel.
Matthew and Lillian's first dance as husband and wife was to Our House by Crosby Stills, Nash and Young.
"It was a great day," Lillian said.
"The Galgorm really took care of us and we had 60 friends and family come out from the US, so they got to experience Belfast and Northern Ireland.
"It was amazing."
Following a honeymoon in Thailand, the McKibbins are enjoying married life.
"I love it," Lillian said.
"It's just great after being apart for so long, I think our honeymoon phase is going to last a long time."
