A chance meeting on a Co Antrim beach nearly 10 years ago led to love and marriage for Moira couple Richard and Jill Cregan.

Richard (27), a pharmacist from Richhill, and Jill (24), a teacher from Markethill, both in Co Armagh, had been in Portrush for holiday breaks when they met each other on the beach.

They got chatting and Richard asked Jill out on a date.

“We realised we lived only five miles from each other,” Richard said.

“I asked Jill out and, following some ups and downs, we started going steady.”

The couple became engaged in June last year.

While Richard ensured it was a romantic proposal, he didn't trust himself to pick the right engagement ring, so they picked it together later the same day.

“I took Jill to Helen's Bay and proposed there,” Richard added. “I had made a photo book. It was very romantic.

“Jill is very picky, so we bought the engagement ring later that day. It's not the sort of thing a man wants to do by himself.”

The couple married at Red Rock Presbyterian Church, outside Markethill, in front of 150 guests.

“It was a lovely service,” Richard said. “It's Jill's church and I know the minister, too. It was very family-orientated.”

The Cregans' wedding reception was held at Castle Leslie in Co Monaghan and their first dance as husband and wife was to Adele's Make You Feel My Love.

“We loved our wedding day,” Richard added. “It flew by. It was lovely and peaceful.

“There was one rain shower as Jill got off her horse and carriage, but apart from that the weather was lovely. We were lucky.”

After the wedding, the new Mr and Mrs Cregan headed off on a European cruise.

“Our honeymoon was lovely. We visited some great places, like Croatia, Italy, France and Spain.”

Richard and Jill are back home and enjoying every moment of married life.

“It's very good,” Richard said. “I definitely can't complain at all. It's wonderful, actually.

“We are looking forward to our first Christmas.”
