Scott Girdlestone and Helen Stevenson enjoyed getting married in Northern Ireland on July 7 so much that they're doing it for a second time in Australia later this month.

Helen (29), an account manager for Yahoo, from Kilkeel, Co Down, met Scott (34), a financial consultant from Canberra, Australia, in September 2005.

Helen was backpacking after finishing her studies in Belfast and Scott was the first person she met on a night out in Sydney.

“We kept bumping into each other,” Helen said. “Eventually he got my number and asked me out on a date.”

They fell in love and then, on February 12, 2011, Scott got down on one knee at Milk Beach in Sydney Harbour National Park to ask Helen to be his wife.

The Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge provided the stunning backdrop for the romantic proposal that Helen had “absolutely no idea” was coming. The couple married at Mourne Presbyterian Church in Kilkeel and a beautiful reception followed at the Slieve Donard in Newcastle.

Their first dance as husband and wife was You Are The Sunshine Of My Life sung by Frank Sinatra. After the wedding Scott and Helen headed on honeymoon to Sri Lanka and then the Maldives.

The couple said their friends and family travelling to Northern Ireland from all over the world to celebrate with them made the day even more special.

“We even had our good friend Thomas Stewart from Australia fly over to attend and take the wedding photos,” Helen said.

“We managed to get the most beautiful day. It had rained and stormed in the week leading up to the wedding and I was prepared for the worst with my welly boots, but the sun came out on the Saturday for us, which was great.

“Thanks goes to our parents and to all our friends and family who made the trip to celebrate with us.” Scott and Helen are enjoying married life and have a second marriage blessing and party coming up in Australia on August 18.

Helen said. “We are having a wedding blessing and party over here in Australia, so that we can celebrate with Scott’s family, so my wedding planning has not quite finished yet.”
