Mitsubishi brag that their tough and rugged L200 is the ultimate pick-up.

Competition is formidable, with competitive offerings from Nissan, Toyota, Ford, Izuzu, VW and others taking to the battleground. Proof is in both the sales’ figures and the driving. Close on 7,000 L200 units were sold in the UK and Ireland during 2012.
Buyers can choose from short and long wheelbase variants and a wide range of specifications and special editions, including the Trojan version that served me well during a week spent on muddy tracks and precipitous hillsides.
On road it’s a bit of a beast – and not the easiest monster to park, with heavy steering, albeit power-assisted rack and pinion, demanding meaty biceps.
Power comes from a super-clean and economical 2.5-litre turbocharged and inter-cooled diesel unit, available in 134 bhp and 175 bhp versions and with the options of two or four-wheel drive and manual or automatic transmissions. There are both single and double-track versions. The dynamic front suspension system is based on the Mitsubishi Shogan’s well proven set-up of coil springs and independent double wishbones.
Rugged build make this a vehicle that is eminently at home in farmyards and on building sites but it also finds a market among outdoor sports enthusiasts and very active families being a familiar sight at showgrounds, equestrian venues, race tracks and MTB circuits.
A true workhorse, the L200 can carry a payload of more than a tonne, with a tow load capacity of 2,700 kg.
Residual values, based on three years or 30,000 miles of usage, are a respectable 44 to 46 per cent while insurance groups span 8E to 12E. The L200 holds a four-star Euro NACP safety rating and is made from 95 per cent recyclable materials.
Each L200 can be personalised, with a range of options, including an aluminium tonneau cover and a roof-mounted DVD system.
The car is covered by a three-year/100,000 mile, 12 year anti-corrosion perforation and three-year pan-European warranty, along with roadside, home and accident assistance. On the road prices start from around £18,300.
