Kia pro_cee’d review: One for Europe
Kia's busy designers have added sophisticated new power-trains, a sporty GT-Line trim level and major additions to connected car systems, making their stylish three-door pro_cee’d even more of a winner.
‘Sleek, long, low and lithe’ are the words chosen by Kia’s marketing people to describe the GT Line’s visual impact.
Conceived at the company’s Frankfurt design studio, built at its Zilina plant in Slovakia and targeted specifically for the European market, the GT-Line model offers sharp, coupé like styling, inside and out, but with lower taxation, insurance, fuel and overall running costs and more comfort-orientated chassis settings than on the full-blooded top of the range 201 bhp pro_cee’d GT.
The revised eight model pro_cee’d line-up is based on five engine options, two transmissions and three trim levels and introduces a potent little 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and a new 1.6-litre CRDi turbo diesel to the line-up, a development which bring emissions down to as low as 99g/km.
The diesel offers Kia’s interesting new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Perfectly chosen ratios and smooth as silk gear changes have become a Kia forté and during our tenure it was the car’s remarkable ease of drivability that impressed the most – always being in the right gear comes as second nature when you are driving this litle gem.
And things are set to get even better on the competence front, with 70 per cent of the Korean based company’s internal combustion engines set to be replaced over the next couple of years with new, downsized, more fuel efficient alternatives.
As usual with Kia, equipment levels are very high and attention to detail is commendable. The GT Line comes, for example, with a seven-inch touch screen featuring a colour reversing camera plus European mapping, a traffic messaging channel, UK postcode entry and a choice of fast, short or economical routes, linked to Tom Tom connected services to deliver useful additional driver information.
Kia’s servicing packages and seven-year, fully transferable warranties are industry leading while fuel economy is outstanding, ranging from 47.1-mpg up to an impressive 74.3-mpg, dependent on model.
Pricing for the pro_ceed kicks in at £15,250 for the entry level 1.4-litre SR while £19,720 will buy you the 1.6-litre JT-TDi GT-Line model we tested and the high performance 1.6-litre TD GDI carries a £22.910 price tag.
