There’s no denying that the Lexus RC is among the most beautiful and distinctive cars on our roads today – but could beauty prove to be only skin deep?

Well, this concept-to-reality coupé takes Toyota’s premium brand into new territory. Before climbing on board, take a step backwards and admire the lithe and seductive bodylines that sweep back from the most striking interpretation yet of Lexus’s trademark spindle grille.

Longer, wider and lower than the iS saloon on which it is based, the RC is a big, car, with substantial and wide opening doors –  but it’s still an undignified struggle to clamber over the rather high sill and drop into the rear seats, while it is cramped up front as well – which is the price to be paid for the large, well padded and superbly comfortable but space hugging plush leather seats for four.

Don’t expect a capacious boot, especially if you opt for the 2.5-litre hybrid power-train rather than the 1,998cc petrol powered and turbo-charged £39,115 Sport version that we tested. Making the best of the latter’s eight-speed, sports direct automatic gearbox and the punchy 16 valve DOHC engine, the 0-62-mph dash takes 7.5-secionds while top-speed is rated at 143-mph but throttle response seems a little tardy.

Despite the car’s bulk, a fuel consumption figure of 38.7-mpg is claimed in the combined cycle.

Though far from being a sports car, this one has the demeanour of a high quality high performance touring car married to the sheer class and luxury of an executive express – truly a hybrid, if you like!

If, however, you yearn for serious high speed motoring then there’s the barn-storming RCF, whose V8 engine pumps out an impressive 467-bhp

The RC currently provides a choice of three trim levels and the check list for the Sport version we sampled runs to 50 closely typed lines, including such goodies as LED headlights, daylight running lights and rear lights, 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive dampers, traction control, hill-start assist, automatic high beam, tyre pressure warning, stop and start, lane keep assist, dual-zone climate control, a seven-inch multimedia screen, auxiliary and USB ports, and on and on and on... In fact, you’ll probably find the proverbial kitchen sink in there somewhere!
