What you'll need
250g butter, softened
250g Whitworths Fine Demerera Sugar
4 large eggs
250g self-raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
30g cocoa powder
2 tbsp milk
for the Buttercream
175g butter, softened
275g Whitworths Superfine Icing Sugar
25g cocoa powder
Chocolate, sweets and candles to decorate
Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas 4/350°F. Lightly grease and line a 27cm x 20cm baking tin with baking paper.
Place all the cake ingredients in a large mixing bowl and beat them together with an electric whisk for two to three minutes.
Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 20-25 minutes; or until the surface of the cake springs back when gently pressed with a finger, or a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Turn out onto a wire rack and allow to cool completely.
To make the buttercream; place the butter, Whitworths Superfine Icing Sugar and cocoa powder into a large bowl and mix well until the mixture is completely smooth and a spreadable consistency.
Spread the top of the cake with the buttercream. Decorate and serve.
