Are my periods normal?

Fiona Caine is here to help if you have a relationship, sexual, marriage or family problem.

I’m 13 and have been having periods for about nine months, but they are not like my friend’s. Her periods come regularly each month but mine are sometimes every two weeks and sometimes there is a long gap before the next one.

Sometimes they are really heavy but my mum says this is fine.

Where can I find out if this is normal without going to the doctor? RR

FIONA SAYS: VISIT YOUNG PERSON'S WEBSITE FOR ADVICE

Chances are your mum's right, because some women take a long time before their periods settle down into a regular pattern.

I don't know why you won't talk to your doctor, but if you'd really rather not, look at The Site (thesite.org).

In the ‘Health and Wellbeing' section, under ‘Women's Health', you'll find lots of information about periods, including the facts and myths.

You'll also find out about missed periods and premenstrual syndrome, if this becomes an issue at any time.
