I'm scared to have sex after rape

Fiona Caine is here to help if you have a relationship, sexual, marriage or family problem.

I was raped about eight years ago when I was 19. The man was caught, prosecuted and jailed and I had lots of support, so thought I had put the whole thing behind me.

Since then, I’ve avoided any kind of sexual relationship, but have recently become very close to someone and felt ready to sleep with him.

We came close to it last week but at the last minute it suddenly all hit me and I started sobbing hysterically.

I tried to explain things to my boyfriend, but I don’t think he really understood it.

Now I realise that I am terrified of sex and I don’t know what to do about it. TW

FIONA SAYS: CALL HELPLINE SERVICE FOR SUPPORT

If this is the first time that you have allowed yourself to become intimate with someone since you were raped then your reaction is not at all strange.

I hope your boyfriend is understanding enough not to pressure you until you are able to relax sufficiently to enjoy a sexual relationship with him.

Whether or not you were in contact with a Rape Crisis Centre at the time of your rape, do please contact its counsellors now.

It will be of enormous practical help to you, so do please talk to them for support.
