Stairway's first steps began here

By Eddie McIlwaine

Bake Off's Paul Hollywood says that his favourite song is Stairway To Heaven. In fact, he wants the Led Zeppelin classic to be played at his funeral when he has to depart this mortal coil, hopefully years from now.

What Hollywood might not know is that the first place that Stairway To Heaven was heard in public was actually the Ulster Hall in Belfast when Zeppelin were in town for a concert back in 1971.

It took off right away in that year and became a massive success, still doing the rounds today. It was composed by guitarist Jimmy Page and vocalist Robert Plant and is often referred to as one of the greatest rock songs of all time.

Paul Hollywood's book The Weekend Baker (Penguin/Michael Joseph £20) is out today.
