Got the munchies? How about a nice bag of Cajun Squirrel crisps?
Thursday, 29 January 2009
A new range of crisp flavours which are sure to shock snack lovers used to Ready Salted or Cheese and Onion hit the shops today.
The Walkers’ Do Us a Flavour competition will see six new daring flavours unleashed on an unsuspecting public.
The competition, which started last July, saw budding crisp connoisseurs enter their unique flavour for the chance to win £50,000 and have their crisps made a permanent addition to the range.
It was then up to celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal and a judging panel to narrow down the hopefuls to the final six.
The six finalists are Builder's Breakfast, Crispy Duck and Hoisin, Onion Bhaji, Chilli and Chocolate, Fish and Chips and Cajun Squirrel.
The crisps are available in shops now, and the public can vote for their favourite flavour at www.walkers.co.uk before the winner is announced on May 2.
As well as seeing their creation for sale and receiving a cash prize, the winner will also receive a 1% share of any profit their combination makes.
Of the competition, judge Heston Blumenthal said: “The complexities of flavour fascinate me and to watch the British public get so excited about taste has been absolutely inspiring.
“We've had an incredible response and sifting through the entries has been quite incredible. I can't wait to see which one the public choose as their winner!”
They may be the six favourites of the Michelin-starred chef, but when the Belfast Telegraph took to the streets with the new flavours we found the public less convinced.
The Chilli and Chocolate brand in particular left many dissatisfied. Friends Lara Jenary (21), Sarah Meyerkort (19) and Catherine McKenna (19) from Belfast were lukewarm about the new flavour.

Lara said: “They're really different, but they don't really taste like chocolate until the aftertaste.”
Martine McKenna (38) from Cookstown, was more impressed with the Chilli and Chocolate. She said: “They're not too bad, I would probably buy them.”
Stewart Milburn (48) a joiner from Newcastle, tried the Builder’s Breakfast. He said: “Very nice, I would definitely buy them. There's kind of a prawn cocktail flavour off them.”
Fellow joiner Frank Steele (40) added: “Lovely, I would definitely buy them. How much are they?”
Rachel North (56) a Belfast shop assistant said Crispy Duck and Hoisin were her favourite: “These are really nice and cheaper than a Chinese! I would buy them.”
Pamela Wallace (49) a shop assistant from Belfast said: “I love fish and chips but these taste nothing like that, I don't like these at all.”
Liam Hughes (30) from Belfast, a coffee kiosk attendant, said of Cajun Squirrel and Onion Bhaji: “Those squirrel crisps are horrible, they're pretty bland, but I really like the onion bhaji ones.”
